Happy Holidays

Allow me to play devil's advocate to my own last post by introducing this link to Mike Gold's blog. Wonderful statement on the hypocrisy of many Christians' take on "freedom of religion".

I particularly liked the following:
"The very first article in the Bill of Rights is, and I quote: Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

Damn, that’s eloquent. It’s the greatest, most inspirational sentence ever written in any language, in my humble opinion. And nowhere does it say “but only for Christians.”

as well as:

The number one character trait of religious bigots: if you publicly disagree with them, then they say you are denying them their religious freedom and, therefore, YOU are the bigot.
But go read it for yourself, so I don't have to quote it to you.

Christmas Tuneage

What I'm listening to, in no particular order:

  • Gary Glitter "Another Rock and Roll Christmas"
  • Jars of Clay "Little Drummer Boy"
  • George Michael "Last Christmas" [Hillary Duff? Hell no]
  • Band Aid "Do They Know It's Christmas?" [doubt it guys, since it's Africa and they probably don't celebrate it there - nice thought, though]
  • Johnny Mathis "Sleigh Ride" [Mathis is, in my opinion, the undisputed master of Christmas music]
  • Frank Sinatra "Let It Snow"
  • Bing Crosby "Winter Wonderland" [Bing and Frank are second only to Mathis]
  • Jewel "Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer" [don't knock it if you haven't heard it - my favorite version ever]
  • Barenaked Ladies and Sarah MacLachlan "God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen"
  • Sting "I Saw Three Ships"
  • SheDaisy "What Child Is This?"
  • The Muppets and John Denver "We Wish You a Merry Christmas" [really just for Animal yelling "WON'T GO!"]
and, of course,
  • U2 "Christmas (Baby Please Come Home)"

Comedy Classic

Bill Cosby, Himself

Was just thinking about this one the other day, since it's on my Wish List (not so subtle hint). It's a comedy routine that's more than 20 years old and it still never fails to amuse me.

Some quotes, shamelessly stolen from IMBD.com:

"So I go to the refrigerator and I get the damned BACON and the SAUSAGE, makin' breakfast at six o'clock BLAM in the MORNING, and then I GRAB THE - you have to be careful with eggs."

"Dad is great! He give us the chocolate cake!"

"I've always heard about people having a conniption but I've never seen one. You don't want to see 'em. My wife's face split. My wife's face split and the skin and hair split and came off of her face so that there was nothing except a skull. And orange lights came out of her hair and there was glitter all around. And fire shot from her eye sockets and began to burn my stomach and she said, 'WHERE DID THEY GET CHOCOLATE CAKE FROM?'"

Hee.
